In honor of Beau Biden and his family, and on behalf of all of those who have been touched by brain cancer, I would like to propose that the federal government increase the NIH’s funding for brain cancer research.
In 2014, the NIH received $289M for brain cancer research. Much of this funding supports research for a more common tumor, GBM, however many of us (myself included) have rarer tumors that receive much less funding. It is clear that finding new treatments for this disease is critical, yet underfunded.
There have been few new treatments introduced in the last 30 years and each new treatment takes a long period of time to be developed. Increased funding could support the speed and depth of research that allows for the discovery of new therapies for this debilitating disease.
