In 1862 the United States broke the 1851 Fort Laramie Treaty signed among the Great Sioux, Arapaho, and Cheyenne Nations, which guaranteed the ancestral lands to these Nations. The U.S. found gold in Montana and began building the Bozeman trail and forts, trough their lands--a direct contravention of the treaty.
This led to war, which the U.S. lost, concluding in the 1868 Fort Laramie Treaty. The U.S. broke this treaty after finding gold in the Black Hills. The Black Hills are sacred. They are essential to the identity and wellbeing of the Lakota and other plains Nations. They have been illegally strip mined, developed upon, and descrated for a century and a half. Stop this illegal occupation. Return the Black Hills to full blooded Lakota and related bands who still practice the old ways
