We respectfully request that a commemorative stamp be issued soon honoring Harvey Milk and his work in the LGBT movement for civil rights and equality. As the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California, as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, Milk helped open the doors for gays and lesbians in the United States by championing the civil rights for homosexuals. Since Milk’s murder in 1978, he has remained a symbol of activism for the LGBT community.
President Obama awarded Harvey Milk the 2009 Presidential Medal of Freedom. This would be yet another way to recognize this important historical leader in the ongoing fight for equality for all in the United States.
As Milk himself said, "You gotta give them hope."
