Honor Marine Corporal Borchers, age 93 for loyalty and courage in WWII combat and peacemaking.

Marine Corporal Robert E. Borchers (REB), age 93, experienced unspeakable horrors of combat in the tropical jungles of Guadalcanal. With a 45 caliber pistol on his belt he laid wire under fire behind enemy lines. He was with the first Marines to land in Japan, after the atom bombs were dropped and the peace treaty signed. Young children were the first Japanese who presented themselves to the conquers. His family has a faded black-and-white snapshot of him kneeling to hand a chocolate bar to a very young and war-shocked child. In 1946 REB was so happy to return Chicago to marry his sweetheart Lucy (died in 1982) and lead a normal life and raised a family of 2 sons, 3 daughters, 8 grandchildren, & 9 great grandchildren.
