We seek to have February proclaimed as National Kinship Caregiver Month. The Proclamation will honor those family members who come forward to protect, nurture, and raise children of relatives unable to care for their children. Our nation must recognize that currently 2.7 million children live with kin; that Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, Sandra Day O’Connor, Maya Angelou, Steven Jobs and countless other Americans were raised by their kin; and that George and Martha Washington were kinship caregivers to Martha’s grandchildren, Eleanor Parke Custis and George Washington Parke Custis, who were the first children to live in the presidential manor; therefore, we propose that the month of George Washington’s birthday, be proclaimed National Kinship Caregiver Month.
