Liberty University is a private Christian college located in Lynchburg, VA, home to 14,000 students residentially. Despite relying on government tax breaks, the university's code of conduct prohibits students from obtaining abortions while attending.
According to the code of conduct, any student guilty of "Procuring, financing, facilitating, or obtaining an abortion" will be fined $500 and face the possibility of being expelled.
Title IX expressly states that educational institutions cannot "permit a penalty to be imposed on any person or individual because such person or individual is seeking a legal abortion."
I propose that Liberty instead offer voluntary counselling services, which would be more supportive of the students and would also honor federal law.
