President Obama, you were re-elected on a promise to reduce our budget deficit in a "balanced" way: $2.50 in spending cuts for every $1 of additional "revenue" (taxes). You made that promise during the first presidential debate.
On Jan 1, payroll taxes went up, increasing the average American's tax burden by about another $1,000 a year.
That's a lot of dollars of revenue you got, with no cuts in return.
The CBO has scored the "fiscal cliff" bill as including $620 billion in new tax hikes, with only $15 billion in spending cuts.
That's even more dollars.
The only budget you proposed during your first term was so unserious that it was rejected unanimously by both the House and Senate.
We need deal with our deficit. Proposing a budget that honors your promise is a good start.
