How to eliminate our countries National Debt crisis

To eliminate our debt, I propose to the president that congress creates a national sales tax similar to a state sales tax. This tax shall only be used to offset our countries debt. This tax will expire when the country is out of debt and the countries budget is balanced. This tax should be used rather than raising taxes. This should bring in enough revenue to allow the United States to climb its way out of debt.
