On November 30th the House of Representatives passed H.R.6393, Intelligence Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2017. While the act may seem fine at first glance, examining Section 501 raises some serious concerns. It creates a "committee to counter active measures by the Russian Federation to exert covert influence over peoples and governments." The definitions are where things get dodgy. Under the definition for "active measures by the Russian Federation to exert covert influence" it covers, "Covert broadcasting, Media manipulation, and Disinformation and forgeries." This is incredibly vague and can apply to any news sources outside of the mainstream media. If something is not done all alternative media deemed 'Russian Propaganda' can be made inaccessible or even worse, taken down.
