I am proposing that NEC awareness day be Oct 22 and mint green awareness ribbon be the official NEC awareness ribbon.

Necrotizing Enterocolitis, also known as NEC, is a horrible disease that can affect premature infants, as well as full term infants. It causes death of the intestinal tissues with extensive complications and infections. My daughter was diagnosed with NEC on her 2nd day of life and underwent a massive bowel resection on her 4th day of life. She spent many months thereafter recovering in the hospital.

As a parent, there was little information available on this horrible disease. For our friends and family, access to information about NEC was nearly impossible.

We need more awareness, more information, more research...There are so many families that have been devastated by this disease, some lost their babies, and some babies survive but are left with life long health issues.
