"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me:
I lift my lamp beside the golden door."
Proud words. Perhaps soon to be no longer applicable here. Sadly.
If Trump's America will turn away desperate refugees merely on account of their religious affiliation then America will have ceased to be America. And will have ceased to be a worthy home to the magnificent Statue of Liberty.
We should send it someplace more fitting. Perhaps to Canada, where the new Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, has personally welcomed fleeing Syrian refugees in far greater numbers than have we. Or else let France choose its new home.
