Kim Davis, clerk of Rowan County Kentucky, is being imprisoned for exercising her religious liberty. Her imprisonment for simply acting in accordance with her beliefs is a clear violation of the first amendment's "free exercise" clause. Forcing Kim Davis to sign marriage licenses for same-sex couples is clearly restricting the free exercise of a religion, a power often wielded by tyrannical regimes. The United States has always held the first amendment to the highest standard and this scenario is no different. Regardless of one's stance on same-sex marriage, imprisoning a person for disobeying a flawed law is a slippery slope to tyranny.
