The US Supreme Court decided in Aug, 2012, that it is illegal to sentence children to life without parole. There are currently 38 people from Iowa, being held in prison, on an illegal sentence. The law states that once the sentence is deemed illegal, they should be released or re-sentenced within 3 days. Since the High Court decision was in August, the re-sentencing is long overdue, in violation of Human Rights. The Governor of Iowa responded with a 60 year mandatory sentence, which according to the CDC is a life sentence and is in direct violation of the Supreme Court decision, thus making it illegal as well. We ask that the current administration consider that children can be rehabilitated, and deserve an opportunity to live, recover and be free.
