The now-famous Democrat donkey was first associated with the Democrats 1828 presidential campaign. They decided to use the strong-willed animal on their campaign posters. Later, in 1870 political illustrator Thomas Nast, who drew for Harper’s Weekly, used the donkey in the cartoon “A Live Jackass Kicking a Dead Lion” with the jackass (donkey) tagged as the “Copperhead Papers,” referring to the Democrat-dominated newspapers of the South.
As a southerner I want to build on the momentum from the removal of the Flag of Dixie across this nation and purge the Democrat donkey logo due to its longstanding association with slavery, the KKK, and Jim Crow politics. The sight of this logo triggers many southerns memories of segregation and should be removed from all Democrat literature.
