While the continued US policy of using unmanned drones to strike at military targets within civilian areas is questionable at best, the use of so-called "Double-Tap" strikes - multiple missile strikes launched at the same target several minutes apart - is unconscionable.
Double-tap attacks, whose primary purpose appears to be killing first-responders who attempt to aid the injured, are considered terrorist tactics by the FBI and have been called war crimes by Christof Heyns, the UN special rapporteur on extrajudicial killings.
We call on the Obama administration to issue an immediate moratorium on Double Tap strike tactics, and request an investigation of the drone program, weighing the value of the military goals it achieves against the civilian, non-combatant lives it costs.
