As representatives of the people Congress should not have their own retirement plan or health care especially not a taxpayer funded one. If they were required to rely on Social security and Medicare they would make it work.
They could be eligible for a federal retirement equal to the military benefit of 50% pay after 20 or more years of service. If a member serves less than 20 years they are ineligible for retirement benefits.
