Immediately remove marijuana from the federal list of Schedule 1 substances to allow medical use and research.

Created by D.H. on February 23, 2015

Currently, federal law classifies marijuana (aka cannabis) as a "Schedule 1" substance. This classification is reserved for those substances that are the most dangerous, have a high potential for abuse, and have no medical benefit whatsoever. It has now become abundantly clear that marijuana does have an ever-increasing number of medical benefits and uses... even new Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy states that "for certain medical conditions and symptoms... marijuana can be helpful". The Schedule 1 classification prevents legitimate medical research in the US, subjects medical marijuana patients (using marijuana legally under state law in 23 states) to the possibility of federal prosecution and imprisonment, and is clearly incorrect. Marijuana should be unscheduled immediately.
