This petition advocates for the removal of names from military installations associated with Confederate Generals (e.g., Forts Bragg, Lee and Hood) and unabashed segregationists such as Strom Thurmond (i.e., Strom Thurmond Building and Blvd.).
Whatever merits as soldiers and/or politicians these individuals may have had, they are forever associated with the causes of slavery, segregation and denial of civil rights.
It is intolerable to ask our young soldiers to be stationed at these military posts, in defense of our freedom, named for individuals who fought to deny life, liberty and the civil rights of African-Americans.
President Obama should order the DOD Secretary to immediately remove these names and restore honor and dignity to these military stations.
