Implement an alternative to the Federal Gasoline Excise tax such as a Vehicle Miles Traveled tax.

The Highway Trust Fund is in trouble. There is a Federal Gasoline Excise Tax that funds the Highway Trust Fund(HTF). This fund is responsible for both reducing deficit and funding renovations on roads and highways throughout the nation. Due to increased fuel efficiency in automobiles and increased inflation over the last 20 years, the Federal Gasoline tax is no longer sufficient in keeping the HTF funded. In order to keep from letting our roads fall apart and to keep from going further in debt, we need to make up for lost revenue. If a Vehicle Miles Traveled tax was implemented people would be taxed on road use rather than gasoline use. Fuel efficient cars would pay their fair share for use of the roads, and the nation would have more money to fund highway renovation projects.
