Scientific literacy is sadly beginning to be lacking in the general population in America, leading to people believing unsupported claims of pseudosciences. Fear is often rooted in the unknown or misunderstood, so by promoting education about the sciences and the scientific process these fears can be revealed as ungrounded. For example, the recent movements for anti-vaccines, anti-chemicals, and anti-GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) are all fueled by fear of the unknown. The dangers of these innovations shouldn't be dismissed but instead researched scientifically. Educating the general population on the science behind innovations such as these would combat the fears that drive these movements.
