Those with a mental illness should be afforded the same level of care and coverage as those with physical ailments. It doesn't make any sense that some of the most vulnerable members of our society have little control about how their condition is treated because of social stigma and the bottom lines of insurance companies.
The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Act was passed in 2008, a law requiring insurers to cover mental illness and substance abuse on an equal basis with physical ailments. The law eliminated two-tiered systems for co-pays, deductibles or treatment limitations.
The problem is, more than four years after it was signed into law, the federal rules that would enable states to enforce it have yet to be completed. Please sign and share to encourage movement on this issue.
