Will we have a fair Federal minimum wage change soon? Is one Federal minimum wage appropriate for the approximately 5 million affected employees across our lands? The answer is no because location matters.
Congress and the White House need to look no further than the Federal Employees Pay Comparability Act of 1990 (FEPCA) and the General Schedule (GS) which includes locality modifiers for government workers. An employee in New York City will be paid 28.72% more on top of their base pay than an employee in Bend, Oregon. Implement the same for minimum wage scaling that would be fair to workers and employers. A worker in New York City would have a Federal min wage of $9.33 at the current base but the base should be increased.
