Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactors (or LFTR reactors) were designed and tested at at the beginning of the nuclear arms race -- and were rejected for their lack of capacity to produce weaponry. This technology uses thorium, which is significantly more abundant than uranium (which is along the rarity of platinum). Not only that, it uses nearly all of its fuel, and produces a miniscule amount of waste. Some LFTR designs actually let us clean up existing nuclear waste products!
Japan, China, and the UK all have plans in the works for this technology, yet the only existing programs in the US are private companies. This flexible technology can increase our available energy and decrease our carbon footprint.
