First of all, this is not a petition to force a single religion to be taught as a truth in school. Instead, I am petitioning for a religious LITERACY class. Our nation is behind nearly every developed country today in this area; as a result, we have a populace that is either ignorant or holds grievous misunderstandings about the beliefs and morals of world religions. This causes, at best, uncomfortable international relations, and at worst can have an effect that counters that of the idea of separation of church and state: a fair, equal and compassionate representation of all people, and the chance to be un-persecuted in your own belief sets. A standardized exam tied to a monetary incentive could bring in states that otherwise would refuse to implement the program or make it non-mandatory.
