Implement policies that create equality for transgender students in public schools.

Transgender students face difficulties every day and are often bullied in school. Transgender students don’t have a safe place to use the restroom in school because restrooms are gender specific. Transgender students are also forced to choose “male” or “female” on standardized tests, which conflicts with their gender identity. Well-meaning faculty members who use incorrect pronouns when speaking to transgender students can also contribute to the problem.
First, we propose that non–gender-specific bathrooms should be installed in all public schools. Second, all tests that ask for a student’s gender should include “Other” as a third option. Last, teachers and administrators should have mandatory training sessions on using gender preferred pronouns when speaking to transgender individuals.
