Most government programs have income cutoffs that, once reached, require a termination of benefits. A sliding fee scale allows working individuals to earn more money while still receiving some benefits until they reach self-sufficiency. In the long term, this will save money because it empowers people to get out of poverty. This eliminates the issue of people choosing to stay on government assistance due to a fear of losing all benefits if they begin to increase their salary. The government should not punish those in poverty for bettering their situation. Individuals will be incentivized to continue to work to stay out of poverty if they had more time to adjust as they earn more income.
