It is no secret that Congressional approval ratings are historically low. Despite this fact, 92.8% of incumbents in the House of Representatives were re-elected in 2012.
In the Senate, Scott Brown was the only incumbent defeated in the 2012 general election. Only one incumbent was defeated in their state primary (Richard Lugar) and one chose not to run for re-election (Olympia Snowe). Out of the 32 incumbents vying for re-election, 30 of them were successful (93.75%).
How is it that an overwhelming majority of unpopular members were re-elected?
The answer lies in the fact that our members of Congress pander to campaign financiers & special interest groups to "buy" their seat back in Congress, rather than representing the will of their constituents.
