Despite the global trend of expanding human rights for people across the spectrum of orientation and gender, Russia has joined Uganda and other countries in devising laws where 1) lesbian, gay, bisexual, & transgender (LGBT) people must live in great fear, 2) global businesses are constrained from supporting their LGBT talent with fair policies & benefits, 3) families & friends of LGBT people face severe penalties for protecting their loved ones, and 4) anyone, at any time, may be terrorized by government, or by individuals, based on supposed "suspicion" of being LGBT, without legal protection.
While these policies promote domestic cruelty, they also hinder international business, and a strong and pragmatic response in international trade is clearly warranted and easily defensible.
