Impose a nationwide tax on plastic bags so shoppers are discouraged to use more bags than necessary when shopping out.

I strongly disagree with the mass production of plastic bags that are designed to only be used a couple times but yet are made up of a substance that lasts for many years. Approximately 100,000 marine creatures die a year by plastic entanglement and these are only the ones that are found. Ireland imposed a plastic tax in 2001 which was the first of its kind. The tax cut the plastic bag usage in Ireland by 93.5% according to the Irish Department of the Environment. At the rate of its production and as it accumulates in the ocean, plastic is sending our environment and our marine life into a downward spiral. Its time that we, the people of this country, spread awareness about this issue before its too late.
