As our infrastructure ages and regulation weakens, oil spills are becoming more and more common in the United States -- in our fisheries, our estuaries, and even our suburban neighborhoods.
Currently, the harshest penalty the federal government is able to impose on an oil company is a cash fine which barely scratches the surface of even a single day's profit from these behemoths of American industry.
Sign this petition, and call on the federal government to enact harsher penalties for polluting oil companies. Oil companies which spill oil into the environment should be subject to higher fines, stricter regulations, and more frequent - even regular!- oversight. Restrict the drilling licenses for the worst offenders, and disallow dangerous, extensive pipelines.
