In the communications age, as people spend more and more time communicating long-distance, it becomes increasingly likely that when an emergency occurs, the first person to know about it will be outside of the local area. However, in the current system, when one dials 911, their call is sent to a local call center, with no way to be patched through to one closer to the emergency. This results in delays and even in some cases complete impossibility for a person to report an emergency in progress. Therefore, we petition the Obama administration to issue a mandate to update 911 call centers, enabling operators to transfer calls to distant call centers and facilitate long-distance emergency reporting.
