Currently our healthcare system is suffering from a crisis in availability of older, generic medications to hospitals. These medications are critical to providing patient care, with sometimes no or poor replacement medications existing.
The cause is the lack of financial incentive for companies to produce these inexpensive medications. I propose allowing drug companies a small patient extension (6 months) on each current medication in exchange for a commitment to manufacture 5 needed generic medications that are in demand.
This would cost zero tax money, be simlar to a current successful program to obtain pediatric dosing studies, alleviate a healthcare crisis, and not force any "interventions" as the program would be voluntary.
