As the Amtrak accident in Philadelphia highlights, our post World War 2 transportation infrastructure is aging and failing. A simple speed limiter could have prevented this tragedy, some trucks and cars have them, why don't trains? We see a bridge collapse in Minnesota and train accidents with regularity, such as the Metro North derailment here in the Bronx last year. We see sorely needed projects like the new ARC tunnel from New Jersey to New York City canceled. We face difficult commutes in our metro areas as demand far exceeds capacity, be it train, subway, or highway. Meanwhile, tolls and fares steadily increase. What will it take for us to learn from these issues and do better? We need to invest in transportation for a better future, for our economy and for our people.
