The recent meteor atmospheric impact in Russia and the close flyby of meteor 012 DA14 are a wake up call to how vulnerable and unprepared we are to counter any potential future meteor impact. It is imperative that we improve our capabilities for meteor detection and explore defense options to prevent a catastrophe of a global scale. We need to resume our leadership role in space advancement and charge ahead with the develop of technologies that will enable us to build detection and defense methods. These new technologies should include but not limited to: a space elevator as a supply chain, advanced Near-Earth-Object observing satellites, space drones capable of mining and deflecting meteros and methodologies for ensuring safe large population evacuations.
