The current First Past the Post system used in Federal election under represents the people and their differing political ideologies by indirectly causing a two party system which discourages voting for other parties for the following reasons:
1.) Fearing that their vote will not count for anything since most third parties don't generally receive many votes due to strategic voting.
2.) The Spoiler Effect (enough people vote for a 3rd party that it inadvertently hurts the candidate in a party with views closest to their own; ex. Ralph Naders run in 2000 and Ross Perots run in 1992).
With an Alternate Vote System, people can vote for candidates who represent their views best rather than only trying to vote for the lesser of two evils and allows for more varied ideologies in elections.
