As it currently stands the social security disability insurance program (SSDI) provides assistance to individuals who are fully disabled and cannot earn steady income. But the cutoff for the program is making $1000 /gross/ income in a month.
There are folks the government determine are medically disabled, like myself, who do not qualify because we make over that limit. I make about $1.5k gross, (which is maybe $950ish in pocket), which is nowhere near enough to live on. I have to live with others because my health prevents working full-time. I'm not the only one, and some people who are eligible for SSDI don't work for fear of losing their benefits. This is wrong, there needs to be a bridge between total disability and healthy, Poverty for the "not disabled enough" should be unacceptable.
