Improving the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to provide more nutritious options to Americans

Created by J.G. on July 26, 2016

Approximately 14% of the US population lives on food stamps, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The current structure restricts access to more nutritious food, and places that accept the program. This leads to increased obesity in the US, ~28% for adults and ~47% in children. Investing more into this program can create a stimulus of economic activity (GDP) at a 5:9 ratio ($1 billion investment yields $1.79 billion in return). Improved nutrition mitigates increased program users by providing better capacity to perform job duties. Free-rider issues can be dealt with by stricter screening process that takes into deeper consideration other aid being received, income, and social status. By investing into the SNAP, Americans can prosper with increased efficiency and nutrition.
