On December 4, 1969, Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter, creator of Roc Nation, co-founder of Roc-A-Fella Records and ex-president of Def Jam Recordings, was born in Brooklyn, New York.
In 1996, he rode into mainstream success with his debut, "Reasonable Doubt", self-released by Roc-A-Fella/Priority Records. The next year, he released his next album, "In My Lifetime, Vol. 1", which went to sell 500,000 more than of what his debut sold. From 1998 to 2014, he scored 13 #1 albums on the Billboard 200, outselling Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson.
He later created Rocawear with his then business partner/case manager at the time, Damon Dash in 1999.
He left Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam to form Roc Nation in 2008.
