As a current medical student, there are several economic factors that make entry into a Primary Care specialty unaffordable. By the end of my education, my total student loan debt will be in excess of $300,000. Personally speaking, entering Primary Care is an interest of mine but my immense student debt load will make it almost impossible to choose such a specialty. Incentives need to be provided by what ever means possible to tackle the impending physician shortage as the nation faces one of the largest expansions of insurance coverage in our history.
