Less than half of eligible voters voted in the 2016 general election. Lack of voter enthusiasm is a multifaceted problem that warrants serious review. There are likely strategies that could be implemented to incentivize people to become informed voters. The goal of this petition is to change the perception of voting as a right to a duty akin to jury duty. There could be both carrots and sticks used to encourage higher voter turnout (i.e. nominal tax credits for voting or a small fine for not voting). Awareness of the issues could also be compelled through mandatory briefings of the candidates and constitutional issues for the particular geographic area in which the constituent resides. Notably, individuals would have the freedom to not comply; they would just be subject to a minor fine.
