In 2004 HR218 The Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA) was signed into law. This law grants Active and/or Retired Law Enforcement Officers the right to carry a concealed firearm. Unfortunately, due to the wording of the law, many Correctional Officers are excluded from its benefits. This petition is a request for the Federal Government to review the LEOSA to include Correctional Officers who do not have statutory powers of arrest.
A Correctional Officer will have contact with thousands of incarcerated individuals throughout their career. While enforcing rules and regulations Correctional Officers often become the target of violence including violence outside of the facility they are employed.
