Safety-net programs, such as Food Stamps and WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children), do not cover the costs of diapers and/or diapering supplies (baby wipes, diaper rash creams, etc.). The cost of these supplies can run in excess of 100 dollars per month. Without purchasing assistance, families in need cannot provide proper hygiene to ensure the continued health of young children and cannot avail themselves of early childhood care. Subsequently, the adults of the family are unable to attend work or school consistently. Including diapers and diapering supplies in the list of items approved for purchase with already existing WIC funds will help to alleviate these barriers to success.
