include the %DV of sugar on all food and beverage labels in order to help Americans make healthier eating choices.

Created by H.G. on March 21, 2015

Food and beverage nutrition information labels should include the percent daily value of sugar each serving contributes to the recommended diet.

It has become common knowledge that an excess of sugary foods can cause health problems ranging from tooth decay to diabetes and heart disease, but even health-conscious Americans are limited in their ability to make informed decisions about which foods and drinks are full of added sugars. The sugar, processed food, and beverage lobbies have thus far kept this information off labels to maintain sales.
According to the World Health Organization, "Evidence indicates that intake of free sugars by adults and children should not exceed 10% of total energy...and that a reduction of under 5% of total energy provides additional health benefits."
