We ask the U.S. legislature to push for a law that will make it mandatory to use both the name "East Sea" and "Sea of Japan" for the body of water between Korea and Japan in all school textbooks.
Although the West had used various names, the name East Sea was the most frequently used for centuries. After the invasion of Korea, Japan changed the name to Sea of Japan in international maps.
As the state of Virginia recognized the importance of this dispute, it has approved a new law that requires both names in all textbooks. This should be implemented in all states as well. It is important for students to acknowledge that this dispute has existed between South Korea and Japan for many years.
Therefore, all school textbooks should be required to include “East Sea” with “Sea of Japan.
