My son is covered through a self-insurance plan so although we live in a state with a mandated Autism coverage (including ABA therapy), our insurance company is not mandated to cover it. The only other option is to purchase separate insurance through the health exchange and pay a minimum of $30 per day copay, on top of the monthly premium to provide him with coverage. We're not poor enough for Medicaid but we're not rich enough to afford to pay double insurance just so our son can have the therapies that he needs. The MD waiver system for Medicaid has a waiting list of over 3000 families. It has been established that ABA therapy is essential for all children with autism... Except the middle class ones.
