Include mental health care as a category in the Essential Health Benefits as described in the Affordable Care Act.

Created by K.S. on November 14, 2012

Mental health services, especially those of an inpatient nature, are often limited or completely denied by health insurance companies as they are deemed either unnecessary or less necessary than treatments for other ailments, which is allowed under the current regulatory Wellstone-Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA). Many mental illnesses are frequently not treated properly for this reason. Were Mental Health treatment to be included in the list of Essential Health Benefits as it pertains to the Affordable Care Act there would be less potential for relapse in patients, less need of public assistance programs by individuals with mental illnesses, and potentially less deaths related to various mental illnesses and disorders.
