Include Nigeria to be visited by President Obama during his second trip to Africa. Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and a strategic economic and military partner. A visit by the President will benefit Nigerian citizens more than it will benefit their government. A speech by President Obama would promote good governance; inspire Nigerians to participate in their democracy and to hold their leaders accountable. The US stand on human rights is clear and there does not seem to be formal disagreements by the Nigerian government with those convictions. Speaking directly to the Nigerians would generate the group dynamics essential for motivating their governments to practice human rights ideals. It will be a landmark effort at preventing Nigeria from being another Somalia or Sudan.
