Including People with Disabilities: Require ADA Compliance/Accessibility as a Metric in any College Rating System

Created by L.U. on September 03, 2013

The President’s plan to combat the rising cost of higher education includes connecting financial aid to a school’s performance using a number of metrics. This could discourage acceptance of students with disabilities. How a college handles disability inclusion, access, and accommodations has a major effect on both the attrition and graduation rates of these students.

Should the Obama Administration enact a college rating system, we petition them to:

1. Require that the outcomes for students with disabilities are a component in evaluating the success of any college.
2. Require that ADA Compliance/Accessibility are metrics included in any rating plan.

These will ensure access for students with disabilities, improve all students’ learning, and increase the diversity on campuses nationwide
