State of the art electric cars can drive 180 miles with a 30 min charge. Having to stop every two and a half hours substantially increases the travel times. This will become the biggest problem in mass adoption of electric vehicles once the price comes down over the next few years. Allowing the users to compensate for the lost time with higher highway speed limit would speed up mass adoption and go a long way in decreasing National carbon footprint. This however would decrease the safety of everyone on the road. Autonomous vehicles are already safer drivers than even the best humans, especially in predictable environments such as driving on the highway. Gasoline autonomous vehicles would be just as safe, but a higher speed limit would cause even further increases in emissions.
