Currently the Social Security Administration has strict limits on the length of legal names. All first and middle names combined must be 26 characters or less and all last names must be 26 characters or less. This causes a problem for immigrants with long names and forces them to make the difficult choice to shorten their first or last name or, in some cases, omit their middle name entirely. This also causes a problem for married women who wish to keep all of their names without hyphenating their last name. This is a software issue that could be easily fixed and there is plenty of space on the Social Security card to allow more than two lines of text. Please help me expand the length of the legal name and allow more people to keep the names with which they were born!
